About the Author John Lothes
I received my BA in Psychology from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. I went on to get my MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in Wilmington, NC.
I am a part-time instructor in two departments at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I teach in the Psychology department and the Health and Applied Human Sciences department. I run the gambit of psychology classes that I have taught and I teach Aikido and Aikido based Self Defense classes for PE credits through the health sciences department. I have published research on aikido training and mindfulness as well as published research on DBT.
I work in a private practice, as a psychologist where I do individual therapy and lead Dialectical Behavioral Therapy based groups. I also help run a Partial Hospital Program and a Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program, both of which are DBT based programs.
I am an intensively trained (10 day training through Behavioral Tech – Dr. Linehan’s) DBT therapist, supervise, and help train interns at our office in DBT. I have taught a number of DBT continuing education programs around the nation as well.
I hold a 3rd degree Black Belt (Sand) in Aikido and I am a Purple belt in Brazilian Jujitsu. I founded and am the faculty advisor to the UNCW Aikido Club and the UNCW BJJ Club. I continue to develop my aikido under Richard Price Sensei (Godan) at Kure Beach Aikido/ Gishinkan Dojo and under Andrew Sato Shihan (Rokudan) head instructor of the Aikido World Alliance. I travel extensively throughout the country attending aikido seminars under Sato Sensei.
